Anxiety Prevents You From Showing Up The Way You Would Like To

Do you want to put yourself out there in the dating world, but your anxieties prevent you from attending events or engaging intimately? Perhaps even getting out the door is a challenge as your mind creates so many potential scenarios and requires so much careful planning that going out just becomes overwhelming. Your headspace might be taken up by dwelling on interactions you recently had, excessive worries or fears, or other ruminations, making it hard to focus.

Perhaps you feel you may have social anxiety as your worries keep you from putting yourself out there or attending social events. Or, you may have reached a point where you can’t remember what life was like without anxiety dominating your day-to-day experiences and are ready to change your life for the better.

Regardless of what prompted you to consider therapy, Creating Connections Counselling Services can help you learn more about yourself and your anxiety, as well as, how to build your life back up without your worries controlling your every move.

Anxiety In Our Fast-Paced Society

Stressed man at his computer

We live in an Amazon Prime world, where results are often instantaneous. We have a question and within seconds the answer is at our fingertips. Our technologically advanced lives create a false sense that we are in control of what we see, do, and even think. Anxiety becomes even stronger when situations feel outside of our control.

This naturally impacts how we will feel when events or exchanges in our lives don’t have the same immediacy and certainty. Questioning and re-analysing your interactions, worrying how we’ve been perceived, wondering if we’ll know what to say on a date, in an interview or to a colleague, are some of the ways anxiety may be showing up for you. Everyday events can often leave us with a lot of worry and uncertainty.

Anxiety Keeps Us Stuck In Fearful Thinking Patterns

Though a lot of options exist that can help with overcoming anxiety, many people don’t see a way out and can't imagine not feeling significant worry in many areas of their lives. They may avoid seeking help because they are unsure how they will ever overcome their anxiety or how therapy could play a role in that. But by choosing not to access support, they inadvertently allow anxiety to control their decisions and self-esteem.

Anxiety often leads us to seek reassurance from others, but this temporary relief only feeds the cycle of fearful thinking. The key to overcoming anxiety is not relying on external validation, but learning how to reassure ourselves that we are safe and in control. With tailored treatment and the right tools, therapy can help you understand the root of your anxiety and equip you to break free from the cycle for good. Our counsellors are here to help you develop the skills to manage your anxiety and regain your confidence.

Anxiety Therapy Can Help You Regain Control Of Your Life

Creating Connections Counselling Services provides solution-focused and empowering therapy that can help take anxiety out of the driver’s seat of your life. We will work together to explore the themes of your anxiety, including when it comes up for you in your life and where it causes the most trouble, whether at social events, in your relationships, at work, or while going to sleep.

We can identify how anxiety impacts your mind and body so you will gain a better awareness of when and how it affects you. This will help you learn how to have more control over your thoughts and reactions.

Anxiety is there to help us. Our stress response is an adaptive part of us that is there to ensure our protection and safety. It is there to help us avoid dangers in our lives, but when triggered too often it can be very harmful. The nature of anxiety can make it challenging to spot. Learning to differentiate between how anxiety helps and how it hurts you is really important, and therapy can help you achieve that.

Anxiety Treatment Designed For You

How anxiety impacts our lives is different for each person. What helps one person challenge their anxious thoughts might not work for another. At the start of your therapeutic journey, we will work together to help you learn about how anxiety shows up for you. We will tailor our sessions to address the impact of anxiety that is most pressing for you, in order to quickly alleviate your anxiety symptoms.

We may look at thought exercises, as well as, physical grounding exercises for anxiety to help calm your nervous system and build body awareness. Whether you are brand new to mindfulness techniques for anxiety or more experienced, we will meet you where you are and help you learn healthy coping habits to manage anxiety.

Once we know your anxiety well and where it typically pops up, we can help you create action plans to mitigate your worries and fears. We utilize several approaches including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to challenge your thought patterns during moments of high anxiety and help you reframe and reset. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is another treatment used when emotional reactions due to anxiety impede your ability to function throughout the day. These approaches among many other research-based modalities (or approaches) are ways in which we will help you get on with your life without anxiety being in control.

You don't need to weather the storms of anxiety in your life on your own, and therapy can provide the support and knowledge to help you manage your thoughts. You can learn to answer those worries so they don't impact your ability to function as your best self. We can help you tap into your own inner strengths and innate knowledge to support you during the therapeutic process. You are capable of learning how to cope with anxiety and not only survive but thrive.

You Might Still Have Questions Or Concerns About Anxiety Therapy…

I am worried that talking about my anxiety in therapy will make things worse.

Your therapy session is a safe and supportive place for you to look at your anxiety and allow yourself to notice the feelings and thoughts that come along with it. At Creating Connections Counselling Services, you will find a secure environment with anxiety therapists who can help you feel grounded and calmer during and between each session. When you give your emotions the space to come to the surface with care and compassion, you can learn to look at them objectively and gain not only a different perspective of your thoughts and feelings but also an understanding of how to manage them.

Maybe I just need medication?

Many people with anxiety benefit from medication, and it is one of the many resources that you can utilize. Therapy will give you the tools that will support you to manage your anxious thoughts, fears, and relational challenges brought upon by your anxiety. Regularly attending sessions and following through with therapy will help you no longer feel like your thoughts are in control. Medication and therapy are not a contradiction. You can still benefit from medication even if you are in therapy and vice versa. Medication is not a prerequisite to working on your anxiety, but if it is a consideration for you, supporting you in making that decision is something that can be discussed during your counselling sessions.

I’ve tried therapy before and nothing changed–how will this be any different?

Unfortunately, we have so many clients who have been to therapy in the past and yet still struggle with anxiety. What I can tell you is that those clients feel supported now at our practice. They feel like they are making progress and see shifts in their lives. Anxiety is a specialty at our clinic. We take our client’s goals seriously, continuously checking in to ensure therapy is on the right track, and that they are seeing the results they are looking for.
